Snacks and Dining
For arguably the best views in Khancoban, head up the hill to the Khancoban Country Club. Share a seafood platter (it’s too big for one!) and then sit back with a glass of your favourite beer or wine and enjoy the view over one of the most picturesque 9 hole golf courses in Australia. Some say the course favours left-handers but this is usually right-handers’ when their ball goes bush!
The Khancoban General Store opens at 6.30am where Clive and Glenda will serve you a lavish breakfast with great coffee while you read the paper in front of the wood fire. They also have all the supplies you will need if you are staying in a cabin, cottage or camping. For lunch, they have a full menu from hamburgers to toasted sandwiches and of course, the humble meat pie. There is also a private room available for meetings or conferences.
Shane’O’s Café is open from 10am, and is a great place for smoko or lunch with a full menu from sandwiches to a plate of fish and chips. They also have a great selection of homemade cakes and slices and a fantastic range of teas and coffee. If you are in town for dinner they also do pizzas in the evening – watch out for the hot one, it’s a beaut! They also cater for special occasions with a BYO licence.
If you are looking to stay in hotel accommodation, then the Alpine Inn is the place to be. Local character Kurt cooks up a storm with his seasonal menu. The pub has a wide variety of beers and an extensive wine list. You will find many of the local characters here, who are keen for a chat, as are the friendly bar staff.
Want to find out how Khancoban was established? Travel 10kms up the road to the Murray 1 Power Station where you can enjoy a coffee and snack and find out the history of the Snowy Mountain Scheme. The visitors centre offers visitors an exciting interactive experience with a wide range of displays, hands on exhibits and models. You can also go for a fascinating tour through the power station itself. Bring your School or group along – it’s worth the visit.
We welcome Sam and Jess, the new proprietors of the Khancoban Roadhouse. Sam handles the fuel pumps while Jess runs the cafe. While filling up have a look at the extensive range of fishing gear – there’s everything the enthusiastic angler requires. In the cafe you can get great coffee and cakes, sandwiches and Mrs Mac’s pies. If you’re after breakfast try one of their egg and bacon rolls, all served with a smile from the friendly staff.
Challenge yourself on some of the most spectacular and technical roads in Australia, before settling in to a weekend of relaxed entertainment at the Khancoban Motorcycle Festival.
The festival will kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday 3rd March with a special curtain raising performance by Khancoban Public School. This will be followed by music until midnight from “The Burners”, “The Wayne Ryder band” and “3 on the Tree”. All of the bands are well known around the live music scene, and will play from a wide range of rock and pop covers, from the 60’s through to today. A bar and food stalls will also be on site for the event.
The festival is being held in the parkland on the corner of Scammel Street and Mitchell Ave, adjacent to the Khancoban Pool. The Khancoban community bus will be in operation throughout the event to transport festival goers to and from their accommodation.
On Sunday morning a barbeque breakfast will be available from 8.00am at the festival site. Show n Shine entries will assemble at 8.30am, at the Khancoban shopping centre carpark, and the winner will be announced at 9.30am. Festival tickets are $20 and are available on the day. Children under 18 are free. A portion of the festival’s profits will be donated to the Corryong hospital.
